The Maristian November 2011
Under 10 rugby 1968
We believe this photo is of the first Marist rugby
team to ever run on the field, the U10 team
from 1968. The team was coached by Br Crispin,
assisted by John McCauley who was heavily
involved in the foundation of Marist Rugby.
Holding the ball here is Terry McCauley (1976)
whose brothers Mick (1978), Pat (1983) and
Bernard (1984) also played for the school.
Bernard currently coaches the Marist U12 team
which includes his son Connor.
As a footnote, the U10s won the 1968
premiership; this year’s U12s were successful
defending premiers in their division, 43 years
Barry joined the staff in 1972 as a teacher of mathematics and
religion. He was at different times Year Master, Head of
Mathematics, Assistant Principal (staff ), Senior Master and was
for many years responsible for the College timetable. The large
attendance at his funeral mass in St John Vianney church at
Waramanga included Old Boys, former staff and parents of
former students. Since he retired in 2000, Barry had a number of
health problems, necessitating hospital stays, during which Old
Boys were regular visitors.

Old Boys Association
We recently heldthe association’s
annual general meeting. I am
pleased to say that we have a
new committee to develop the
association for the next few years
and build upon the framework
put in place by the founding committee.
Looking to the immediate future the Association
will be hosting the National Capital Sports Dinner
on November 5. Details have already been
circulated and I encourage all members of the
OBA as well as ex-students to support this event.

Class of 1986 Reunion
Twenty-five years after they left Marist, about 60
members of the class of 1986 met during the
weekend of the mid-semester break. They
gathered at the Capital golf club on Saturday
night; the following day, with their families, they
were shown through the College by Glenn Slater
and remained to enjoy a barbeque.
